Key Note Speaker

Julia Mejia

We are honored to announce Julia M. Mejia, City Councilor At-Large for the City of Boston and founder of Collaborative Parent Leadership Action Network (CPLAN), as our keynote speaker.

From arriving in Boston from the Dominican Republic as a young child raised by a single undocumented mother, to becoming the first Afro-Latina elected to the Boston City Council, Julia has been rooted in community empowerment, equity, and authentic civic engagement. She has dedicated her career to dismantling barriers, amplifying marginalized voices, and creating space for people from all walks of life to step into their power.

As the visionary founder of CPLAN, Julia brought together a diverse group of parents and inspired them to transform frustration into advocacy, encouraging them to “step into their power” and work toward educational equity for all students with the powerful message that “All Means All.”

Now in her fourth term on the Boston City Council, Julia continues to champion policies that elevate community voice, strengthen family-school partnerships, and advance justice and opportunity for every Boston resident

Our Story

Ten years ago, a small and diverse group of mothers, each with different immigration statuses, education levels, incomes, races, and cultural backgrounds, found themselves united by a shared struggle: they were all navigating a school system not built with them in mind.

They gathered around coffee tables and community rooms in Boston, exhausted from watching their children fall through cracks that hurt their social-emotional wellbeing and educational experience. They were frustrated by decisions made about their children without their voices, and they were determined to change the conditions that kept so many families silent, isolated, and unheard.

From that determination, the Collaborative Parent Leadership Action Network (CPLAN) was born.
